Nationally recognized artist, Tuck Hayward was born in Mobile, Alabama in 1950. Tuck’s specialty is vivid, colorful, and exquisitely detailed wildlife paintings rendered in watercolors and often accented with pen and ink. He is also known for his soft and delicate artworks executed with Prismacolor.
Tuck started painting at the age of nine under the direction of Mobile artist Jane Shaw, a “phenomenal teacher’ who taught her students to create their own vision rather than to copy others. His career began at age fifteen when his first one-man exhibition sold out.
Thereafter, he continued to exhibit and sell his art regionally until 1978. At that time Sue Wiggins of Art South Inc., became his sales representative creating international exposure for his work while expanding his list of private and corporate collectors.
Even with early success as an artist, Tuck went on to become an expert in the field of ornithology. At 18 he was one of the four federally licensed handers and netters of migratory birds in Alabama. For six years, he appeared biweekly as a guest expert on CBS radio in Mobile. The unique radio program featured listener participation and questions on bird identification, habits and wildlife in general. He conducted field trips on bird identification and banding for the Mobile Bay Audubon Society, Arkansas Audubon Society and the Mobile Bird Club.
Tuck has authored and illustrated articles for many publications. The Alabama Conservation Magazine, Alabama Ornithological Society, National Audubon’s “American Birds” to name a few, and publications concerning Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and The Rio Grande Zoo in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
After moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1987, Tuck continued his career as an artist. Magpies, roadrunners and other southwestern wildlife soon became additional subjects for his paintings. He also began to study and paint wildlife from the tropics.

Tuck began exhibiting in both community galleries and juried shows. He had his first one man show, “Living Forms,” at the Randall Davey Audubon Center in Santa Fe. He was juried into “Selections ’89” at the College of Santa Fe Fine Arts Gallery where he was honored with an Award of Merit.
While living in Santa Fe, Tuck had a long-standing relationship with the Santa Fe Council for the Arts, Inc. He exhibited in many of their shows at the Armory for the Arts featuring the artwork of local artists. In 1994, Tuck was chosen as one of the 117 artists to represent New Mexico in “Artistas Contemporaneos de Nuevo Mexico” at Salon de Guadalajara in the Mayors Palace in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Tuck exhibited commercially in Santa Fe from 1987 to 1989 at Winsor Betts Fine Art and then from 1989 to 1991 at the Buena Vista Art Center in the Witter Bynner Compound. A one-man show for Tuck was the opening exhibit for the Okun Gallery in April of 1992. He continued to show and sell his work with Barbara and Ed Okun through 1995. His work was also featured at the Festival of the Arts Galley in Corrales, New Mexico and the Wildlife of the World Gallery in Aspen, Colorado.
After living in New Mexico for over a decade, he and his wife, Livia, have returned home to be close to family.
